How Induction Lighting Works
The basic principle is very simple where the energy needed to excite the gases in the tube is externally applied by means of high frequency induction coils. The power for these coils is supplied by a high frequency power generator or as it is commonly called a ballast.
The actual light tubes which contain the gases and fluorescent coatings, are totally sealed with no wires penetrating the glass and no filaments to burn out.
This means that the lamps have an extended lifespan of up to 100,000 hours. As there are no filaments or electrodes in the lamps, the gases and coatings are optimized to give a much higher light output for a lower power input. This means a minimum energy savings of 50% over any other technology presently available.
The lamps run cooler than all other lights thus reducing heat losses both internally as well as externally which results in reducing air conditioning running costs etc. Because of the cooler running, fixtures can be sealed thus resisting ingress of insects, fumes etc. This together with the expected 100,000 hour lifespan of the lamps results in longer lasting lights with little or no maintenance for at least ten years.
Traditional discharge lamps like the HID and fluorescent types, including the so called compact fluorescent, contain anything from three to twenty milligrams of liquid and gaseous mercury. When these lamps are broken this mercury is released into our environment causing potentially serious polution and health problems. The induction lamps contain only 0.25 milligrams of mercury amalgam similar to the mercury amalgam used by dentists to fill our teeth. The environmental polution risk from this form of mercury is very small. This coupled with the long life of the lamps means even less lamps ending up on our landfills etc. thus reducing the risks to virtually zero.
A range of fixtures both imported and locally designed are available, and in most cases these will easily replace the existing fixtures and at the same time offer a minimum of 50% savings in energy. Because we are so confident that our lamps and ballasts will last, we give a three year warranty on all our induction ballasts and a five year warranty on all lamps. Our warranties though carried by us are fully backed up by our overseas manufacturers.
